Trichotillomania (TTM) is an impulse control disorder that causes people to pull out hair from there scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or other parts of the body. Many sufferers feel remorse, shame and self loathing after pulling. Damaging our own hair undoubtedly leads to severe anxiety. Many TTM sufferers feel too ashamed to talk to anyone about what’s going on for them. This condition is getting more exposure, hopefully leading people to realise they are not alone and seek help.
Counselling can be effective for individuals experiencing distress caused by any form of hair loss, by addressing the psychological origins and focussing on enabling them to progress in their lives, by providing tools and skills. Working through your thoughts and feelings with someone who understands this condition can be an enormous relief. Care is given to understanding the unique needs of each individual; developing an effective, solution-based treatment program and providing ongoing support to help each client achieve his or her personal treatment goals.
